Memory Care Dining

Due to the progressive nature of Alzheimer’s and Dementia, some of our memory-care residents will experience a decline in abilities associated with maintaining proper nutrition.  With the Memory Care Dining methods and procedures it allows our residents to receive adequate nutrition and proper intake of food every day.

Sensory Cuisine

A dining process in general is a sensory experience for most people, and memory-care residents are no different.  They will benefit greatly from this sensory stimulus before, during and after the dining process.  Some of our methods utilized in our sensory cuisine include our freshly baked breads and pastries soothing aromas constantly permeate the common areas throughout the day.  The breakfast items such as bacon and muffins baking in the early morning frequently serve as a natural wake up call for many residents.
Popcorn cooking before movie/snack time signals the residents to start heading to the show.  Serving warm towels for their hands and faces, while simultaneously serving ice cream provides a unique hot/cold sensory experience.  We add new sensory additions as frequently as they are developed.

Assigned Seating

Just like you and me, there are some or our residents who have a preference where they would like to sit during meals and snack times.  Assigning seats helps them to build and get used to that daily routine.  We pay attention to which residents get along well, and the others who may quarrel often and adjust to minimize any aggressiveness as well as promote a state of happiness, health, well-being, and calm, allowing the development of friendships.

Easy-Assist Plates & Silverware

Our utensils and plates are brightly colored, easily handled and are held in place.  Tremors, lack visual acuity, poor-coordination can be  common hinderances to the dining process so the provision of these items can help to reduce the difficulties and challenges faced during meal times.

Routine Snacks & Meal Times

We provide set daily meal times throughout the week along with regular snack times each afternoon.  Having a set time for meals and snacks to be served leads to the promotion of a healthy diet and a  daily routine that the residents anticipate looking forward to.

Musical Accompaniments

We play a wide variety of music to provide a lively yet calmly stimulating environment for dining during meal times.  The live performances are provided by staff and family members with the guitar and piano.  Playing music creates a unique and rewarding ambiance during meal times.

Memory Care Activities

Our activities are designed based on cognitive memory and our memory-care specific methods are based on varying levels of cognitive function. We offer many items from sensory eating all the way to pet therapy so our residents are able to thrive in our environment, enjoy and embrace life.  Personalized, patient-centered care will provide stimulating sensory dining, daily engaging activities, social interaction encouragement and pet therapy environment.

Exercise and Physical Activities

Providing daily physical activity for our residents is an option that is always encouraged.  We invite and encourage our residents to engage in our fun, physical group activities such as balloon volleyball, chair yoga, fly swatter game, and many more!
