Alzheimer's & Dementia Symptoms

We believe having knowledge of our patient's symptoms will assist us in being prepared to provide the best care for all of the residents who move into our Caring Cottages. Every resident is unique, and our philosophy is for us to be aware and provide compassion, sympathy, and care, throughout their stay with us and the progression of the disease. Caring Cottage will provide a comforting oasis for them to live for while they remain with us.

DEPRESSION/SADNESS

Alzheimer’s and Dementia patients will have times of sadness often leading to tears and sometimes depression.

AGITATION

At times an Alzheimer’s and Dementia patient can become argumentative, agitated, or even angry.

PERSONAL CLUES

Each and every resident has their own characteristics or “tell” that will let us know there is something they need attention for.

SENSORY BREAKDOWN

In some cases, Alzheimer’s and Dementia patients will have a sensitivity to movements, lights, and sounds, due to the confusing and unwanted noises, hallucinations, and even distractions in their heads.

SUNDOWNERS

Sun downing tends to happen around 4:30 to 6:30, coinciding with the sun going down.  At this time the residents can become a little more confused, agitated, or sad.

WANDERING

As it states this act is simply a walking around the community with a mission or task or simply walking because they do not know what to do or exactly where they are.

SELF CARE CONCERNS

Self care can become a difficult task to accomplish, because some individuals are not able to comprehend the tasks or they are simply forgetting to do them.

PAST AND PRESENT CONFUSION

Alzheimer’s and Dementia patients frequently confuse their past and their present. We offer a "go with the flow" care so they are comfortable in their moments.

POSSESSIVENESS/KLEPTOMANIA

In some cases, residents may become very possessive over their belongings or even someone else’s. We work with a distraction method versus telling them no, which could cause them aggravation.

ANXIETY OR OVERWHELMED

There will be some days a resident may become overwhelmed or have anxiety during their day.  We will work with them to find them a comforting space and stay with them offering reassurance, understanding and care.
